Romney wins big, promises 'Better America' as Gingrich stays aloof
Apr 24th 2012, 23:38

Mitt Romney won the Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island primaries Tuesday, the AP reported, on his way to an expected five-state primary sweep, leaving behind his challengers and most remaining doubt that he will be the Republican candidate to face President Obama in November.

The other state holding a primary is New York.

"Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less," Romney said from New Hampshire, where he started in campaign in June. "To all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer.  A better America begins tonight.

Newt Gingrich is Romney's closest challenger, but he desperately trails by every marker – the delegate count, campaign money and primary or caucus victories.

Gingrich has campaigned extensively in Delaware, and had hoped of a strong showing. But daughter Jackie Gingrich Cushman indicated Tuesday afternoon that her father would "reassess" his campaign after the polls close.

Gingrich has vowed to campaign until the party's late-summer convention in Florida. He is carrying more than $4.3 million in debt and has been spending more money than he is collecting.

Romney needs 1,144 to clinch the nomination outright. He cannot do that Tuesday but could make it mathematically impossible in most scenarios for either Gingrich or Texas Rep. Ron Paul to reach that number, based an Associated Press tally.

A total of 209 delegates are at stake.

The latest AP tally puts Romney at 697 delegates, Gingrich at 137 and Paul at 67. Santorum had 269 delegates before he suspended his campaign.

On the Democratic side, President Obama is expected to formally clinch his nomination on Tuesday -- achieving the needed 2,778 delegates by the time polls close Tuesday night. Not that there was ever any doubt, as the Democratic primary was uncontested.
