5 dead after shooting at Arizona home, authorities say
May 2nd 2012, 21:24

Five people were killed Wednesday in shooting at a home in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert that police are investigating as a domestic violence incident.

Police were responding to a disturbance at the house when they received reports of shots fired. Four adults were found dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. A toddler also was found wounded and was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Gilbert police tell FoxNews.com it's not clear at this time if the killings were a murder-suicide or if a gun battle took place in the house. Police say they are still looking at suspects, but based on witness reports they think the shooter is one of the deceased.

The genders and ages of the adults killed weren't immediately released, but Gilbert police Sgt. Bill Balafas said the toddler was a girl between 1 and 2 years old.

At a briefing for reporters, Balafas said all the evidence points to the shooting being a domestic violence situation. He didn't elaborate.

Authorities said the gunman was armed with several firearms, and officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun at the scene.

The gunman's identity and motives weren't immediately known, but sources identify the shooter to the Arizona Republic as Jason "JT" Ready, a well-known reputed neo-Nazi who was running for Pinal County Sheriff.

A law enforcement source confirmed to FOX 10 that Ready was among the dead. His car was parked in the driveway of the house, which reportedly belongs to Ready's girlfriend.

Posted on Ready's campaign Facebook page is the following: "Reports are unconfirmed that a cartel assassination squad murdered JT Ready and several of his friends and family this afternoon in Gilbert Arizona. This page's admin will keep you updated of the situation as soon as possible."

The shootings occurred after 1 p.m. in a residential area.

Witnesses said a SWAT team sealed off part of the area and investigators told residents to remain indoors.

Police are testing an unknown liquid found in 55-gallon drums found in the backyard of the home where the shooting took place.

Officers are staying out of the home while a hazardous materials crew samples the liquid as a precautionary measure.
